Wednesday Listening
Cat Power - Jukebox this is better than The Greatest or the first Covers record, even though i enjoy both of those, i'm really loving this. and while some of the covers are especially powerful -- Aretha Sing One For Me stands out -- Chan's own songs Song to Bobby and Metal Heart are my favorites on the album.
Steve Reich - Drumming i can't believe i never owned this before, it's so good, especially when the people start singing like the marimbas they're playing!
Nina Simone - Wild Is the Wind / High Priestess of Soul
Verlaines - Bird Dog the rare band that's never made a bad or embarassing record, and in fact the albums are all stellar. great painting on the cover too, look it up. supposedly coming out with a new record somewhere in the world soon...i sincerely hope so.

there is in fact a new verlaines album! more debatable cover art, but some great music inside - esp. "it's easier to harden a broken heart." devastating.

too bad no one is putting it out over here...i wonder if f.nun even tried to license?
no idea...maybe it's time for merge to step in! ;)
I'd like to sort-of second what claire said: way back when somebody whetted my taste for Lying In State, but I've never heard the original. I passed on You're Just Too Obscure For Me in the hope that somebody would someday rerelease Hallelujah All The Way Home and Some Disenchanted Evening on a label Stateside.
dead: i might rethink that decision, even if the licensing issue wasn't a non-starter. "you're just too obscure" has a well-chosen tracklist and the sound quality is really good.
