Autumn Still A Lark
Some Songs Considered Blog gives a small shout out to my cover of "Bobby Jean"...though the writer does refer to "Bobby" as a "her" and i think it's about Little Steven. This (and a recent conversation about the Plasmatics) got me wondering if Van Zandt's excellent album Men Without Women is on CD....it is, in this hideous package.

I'm not sure what that dude is talking about, I think he has a little too much time on his hands- BUT I like Springsteen covers almost better than Springsteen songs, have you ever heard Frank Black doing "I'm Goin Down" off of the Oddballs disc?
Mac, thanks for the link! I'm a huge fan and my mind is kind of blown.
I knew the Little Steven angle but that was long after I first heard the song and, quite honestly, projected a lot more of myself onto it. It's something I've always struggled with as a listener - when I read something about a song and it goes against the narrative that plays in my head, does it discount/discredit my interpretation?
@DC I do spend way too much mental energy thinking about music :)
Mac,
Got tix for the Chris Knox benefit. So geeked to see such a lineup I'm taking the train up to NYC for all of 18 hours from DC.
Looking forward to the new stuff.
i'm sticking with the only version i've ever had in my head... it's girl/guy vs. bromance.
"Just to say I miss you baby, good luck goodbye, Bobby Jean"
thanks DC for the frank black info. i had not heard that. please don't tell me that's about SVZ too.
all that matters is that there is a portastatic reference in the wiki entry for the song. i certainly like the acoustic version, but i always thought that bobby jean would work well rocked out similar to iron on.
Portastatic as a full band on the bright ideas tour (i think) opened up with "Bobby Jean" at the crocodile in seattle a couple years ago. It had this great swing and perfect tempo that just blew me away. I'd LOVE to hear that again.
